A cloud of charged gas from the sun hit Earth on Sunday, causing a spectacular light show for people in northern latitudes.
Typically, auroras are only seen around the polar regions. In other words, you are more likely to see the northern lights the further north you go. During geomagnetic storms, however, auroras can travel closer to the equator.
The storm was caused by a coronal mass ejection from the sun that had occurred a few days before. CMEs are large explosions of electrically charged gas from the sun that can travel at millions of miles per hour. According to the SWPC on Sunday, geomagnetic storms may continue through to Tuesday, by which time they will have weakened to G1.
