The Suns hired Frank Vogel to replace Monty Williams, who coached Phoenix to the 2021 NBA Finals and the NBA's best record in 2021-22 at 64-18.
The Phoenix Suns plan to introduce Frank Vogel as their new head coach Tuesday at noon at Footprint Center.
The 49-year-old Vogel agreed to a five-year, $31-million deal to replace Monty Williams, who was fired after Denver eliminated the Suns in the West semifinals by 25 points in Game 6 in Phoenix. Compiling a 431-389 career record, Vogel has coached seven of his 11 teams to the playoffs. Known for his defense, Vogel has had three teams finish the regular season first in defensive rating — 2012-13 Pacers, 2013-14 Pacers and 2020-21 Lakers — and two more rank third in that category — 2015-16 Pacers and 2019-20 Lakers.
Vogel was a finalist for the Suns vacancy along with Doc Rivers, Nick Nurse, Suns associate head coach Kevin Young and Sacramento Kings assistant Jordi Fernandez.Young, who joined the Suns going into the 2020-21 season to coach under Williams, is now the highest-paid assistant in the NBA on a deal that's paying him $2 million plus a year.
