Paul Levy, president of the Center City District in Philadelphia, will be in Columbus on Thursday to discuss efforts to bring people back post-COVID
Paul Levy knows all about such efforts. As president and CEO of Center City District in Philadelphia for more than 30 years, he has seen his share of challenges and the ups and downs that downtowns have experienced during redevelopment waves and economic crises.Levy has been helping to guide his city's return from COVID, still bullish that more workers will return to Philadelphia's downtown, while acknowledging not all of them will.
Keeping a downtown safe and clean is important, he said. To that end, his group has added bicycle patrols and the city of Philadelphia provides $100 million annually for services and housing for the city's homeless population, which Levy said numbers up to 6,000 citywide.The overnight number was 509. Now it's 257, he said.
That helped lead to 70,000 people living in Philadelphia's central business district, with another 130,000 in adjacent neighborhoods.Philadelphia has also boosted its tourism and hospitality industry, growing the number of downtown hotel rooms from 6,000 in 1991 to 13,000 today, he said.Philadelphia's downtown workforce in early 2020 numbered 310,000.
According to the Capital Crossroads and Discovery special improvement districts State of Downtown for 2021, released in February, 89,410 workers had been employed in downtown Columbus.
