Jalen Hurts wins MVP as KC’s quest for an unprecedented third straight Super Bowl is denied
Philadelphia won Super Bowl 59 on Sunday, shutting down Kansas City 40-22 at the Caesars Superdome in New Orleans and ending KC’s quest to become the first team in NFL history to win three in a row.
Hurts threw for one score and ran for one as Philadelphia built a 24-0 lead in the first half. At the same time KC’s superlative leader, Patrick Mahomes, was unable to get untracked. He completed just six passes for 33 yards, was sacked three times and intercepted twice. An expected close battle between the NFC and AFC champions became a blowout instead. Mahomes had rallied his team to victories in each of the past two Super Bowl but never came close this time.Philadelphia’s Saquon Barkley, the NFL offensive player of the year, was limited to 57 yards on 25 carries but eclipsed the NFL record of 2,476 yards in a season set in 1998 by Denver’s Terrell Davis. Barkley celebrated his 28th birthday on Sunday. He caught six passes for 40 yards.
Before Super Bowl 59, Hurts had appeared in eight career postseason games. He now has led the Eagles to a pair of Super Bowl matchups, both against Kansas City. The Eagles have made four Super Bowl appearances in franchise history dating to 1981, when they lost to the Oakland Raiders. They won their previous title in 2018 when backup quarterback Nick Foles led them past Tom Brady and the New England Patriots.
The Super Bowl is, of course, a remarkable exercise in excess. Although tickets were much more expensive several weeks ago, Vivid Seats had some available two hours before game time at prices between US$2,100 and US$5,000.
