The new downtown library being built on time and on budget seems as implausible as waving a magic wand to make inflation disappear .Sampson acknowledged in response to questions this week that construction costs have increased, but said the jump is being absorbed through savings found elsewhere in the project and $3 million built into the budget to account for increases.
Ottawa’s new flagship library rose in price from the $192.9 million approved in 2018 to $334.6 million. That’s a whopping increase of 73 per cent or $141 million — more than the entire projected cost of Saskatoon’s new library. Supply chain issues and escalating costs increased the price. Meanwhile, plans for a new events centre and entertainment district in Sudbury, Ont., suffered a morethis week when its city council officially shelved the project after it was revealed in July that the revised cost had risen to $215 million, about $115 million higher than originally estimated.
