The Saskatchewan Party government appears to be seeking better messengers, rather than signalling any change in its shift to the right.
Merriman has long faced criticism for his perceived ineffectiveness in the role, particularly during the pandemic, so removing him as health minister now, in favour of Everett Hindley, might surprise.
Health care routinely tops most surveys of Canadians’ top concerns, so this portfolio always ranks as critical. But Merriman carries a lot of baggage from the pandemic, so moving him at some point was probably inevitable. Hindley, a former journalist and broadcaster who served on former premier Brad Wall’s staff and now represents Wall’s former constituency of Swift Current, was moved into the hot seat infrom his former role as minister of mental health and addictions and rural and remote health.
The move for Hindley, who was first elected in a 2018 byelection to replace Wall, could be seen as either a promotion or saddling him with a no-win role. Health minister is more anchor than springboard for a political career in Canada, regardless of jurisdiction. While Merriman seemed an odd choice for health during a pandemic, given a lack of relevant experience, Hindley at least brings his time in his previous portfolio. There was an error, please provide a valid email address.By clicking on the sign up button you consent to receive the above newsletter from Postmedia Network Inc.
