FARMINGDALE, N.Y. – Brooks Koepka has a theory that major championships are the easiest tournaments to win.Koepka shot a course-record, seven-under 63 at Bethpage Black in round one to lead the PGA Championship by one over Danny Lee, and over the rest of the field by considerably more.

Before the tournament began, reigning U.S. Open and defending PGA Championship winner Koepka explained that he had already crossed off 80 players in this week’s 156-man field right away because, quite simply, they had no chance to beat him. Of the remaining players, he figured half of them wouldn’t bring their A-game.

“You know, it was great that Tiger won Augusta, but I mean, we’re at a new week now,” Koepka said after his round. “I’ve just got to go out there and focus on me. I’m not really concerned about what’s going on. You know what you’re going to get when you play with him. I mean, obviously everybody in New York is going to be cheering for him.”

Stoic by nature and terse in conversation, Koepka likely will never be the focus of the golf world’s endless fascination like Tiger, or feel the warmth Rory McIlroy receives for his easy-going nature and open-book personality. Koepka takes a one shot lead over Lee , and a four shot lead over Tommy Fleetwood into Friday’s second round.Behind Koepka, Lee and Fleetwood is a group of five golfers at two-under par, none of whom are household names.

The others at two-under are recent winner Sung Kang, former Canadian Open winner Chez Reavie, big-hitting Luke List, and Mike Lorenzo-Vera, a 34-year-old French golfer who [quickly checks bio] likes cars. One shot behind the unheralded five, is a star-studded group of major champions at one-under par.
