The movie follows composer Steven Lauddem , a lauded composer who is suffering from writer's block while trying to finish his latest opera. His wife Patricia tries to help by making him leave the house to search for inspiration, where he meets Katrina, a tugboat captain with an obsession with romance.
Katrina finds him and admits that while she was initially angry with him, this show has made it clear that she is his muse, much to Steven's shock and concern. Katrina's obsession with Steven sends his life spiraling out of control. While Patricia struggles with her own crisis, she hides it under a need for perfection. At the same time, their son is pursuing his own dangerous romance that, like his father's, could derail his future.
