The 2023 Canada Games host society and the City of Charlottetown are partnering on a permanent outdoor ice surface that will cost $367,000. The infrastructure comes with its own chiller, so the rink can operate in temperatures up to 10 C.
and the pad next to the West Royalty Community Centre. The difference is, the Founders’ Food Hall and Market ice surface has the only machine in the city that can keep the surface cold if the weather gets mild.
The new permanent artificial ice surface is part of the Games’ Illumination event, a 14-day celebration of P.E.I. and Canadian arts and culture. “This was a good partnership to do now so we’ll see how this works," Bernard said. “We may look to do some other outdoor rinks but, right now, this is more geared to the Canada Games."“Pending whether that schedule is on time," Bernard said. “If not, we definitely want to have it running for the new year."
