I am nine years old. I went to the district’s track-and-field meet for the throwing events: shot put and discus. In the morning I competed in discus and got second place. I watched my friends do their events and then went to the shot-put area. Once we got there, they sorted us in alphabetical order and I knew that I would be last because of my name. There was one person in front of me when this grandpa called out that I was a boy and I was not supposed to be in the girls’ shot put.
