CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. — A group of foreign workers in P.E.I. entered their fifth day of a hunger strike on May 27 as they protested recent changes to the province’s immigration policy.
Organizer Rupinder Pal Singh, speaking with SaltWire on the morning of May 27, said by that point he and about 15 others had not eaten anything since May 23 and were relying only on water. They vow to continue the strike until the province commits to addressing their concerns. In a statement to SaltWire on May 27, the provincial government said the 25 per cent reduction is a temporary measure and has not changed at this time.
At the hunger strike, the protesters have set up signs, posters, and banners calling for the province to address their demands. - Thinh Nguyen/SaltWire “The province, in my opinion, has made a big mistake with this. And it's time for them to stop hiding, they need to come forward and make some changes to this.”
“People’ve been throwing things at us,” he said. “We are here doing nothing wrong, we're just sitting and delivering our peaceful message, but why are we getting hate?”
