“I wanted to show my solidarity to the Muslim community,” Meagan Hogg

Asma Husseini had volunteered to help lay out 49 Islamic prayer mats at a public vigil for the victims of Friday’s mass shooting in Christchurch New Zealand. “Last night we found out we had to make it 50,” said Husseini, softly.

Hogg, 32, said “I wanted to show my solidarity to the Muslim community, and show that this action that took place in New Zealand, in Pittsburgh, in Quebec, this is not OK.” Noor Fadel, 20, who was racially abused and assaulted on the Vancouver SkyTrain in 2017 said the attack in New Zealand has re-ignited the anger she has worked to recover from.Fadel said she had just got off a plane on Thursday when someone messaged her on Instagram with a link to the New Zealand attack. Because she had no idea what had happened, she clicked on it, and was exposed to the horrific images the killer had livestreamed.

Harjit Singh Sajjan, Minister of Defence and MP for Fraser South, who spoke at the vigil addressed white supremacy without naming it at the vigil, by calling out “the silence of those who do not condemn these acts of terrorism,” which “must be called out for what they are.”
