“I realize that there are no friends on a powder day,” said our guide, Tom, as our cat\u002Dskiing group salivated on the summit. Below us, a perfect pine\u002Dflecked…

“This entire region is a treasure trove for outdoor recreation,” says Heather Davis, founder and lead guide of Uplift Adventures, a local company that specializes in private and group outdoor experiences in the area. “We’re slowly getting discovered but you don’t need to fight for a front-row seat here. There is plenty of space. In fact, to use a music industry analogy, it’s like we’re on the ‘Indie Tour.’ We haven’t quite made it to the mainstream radio stations yet.

Thanks to two recent trips to the region – one to the ridiculously underrated, powder-christened, and crowd-free Castle Mountain Resort and one to the Crowsnest Pass – the picture I saw was filled with raw natural beauty, unexpected discoveries and untapped potential. And, presiding over the entire “portrait,” a warm and unpretentious spirit that truly beckons those with the “explorer” mindset.

In the tucked-away town of Coleman we also strolled through the impressive Crowsnest Museum, which is situated in the 90-year-old brick-and-stone Coleman High School. It boasts over 100,000 historic artifacts from, mainly, the rich coal mining history in the area. Article contentJust down the street from Country Encounters, as the sun was going down on our first day of exploring, we sauntered down the historic two-kilometre Miners Path, a peaceful creekside stroll that ends at a pretty icefall.

Thanks to the recent fresh snow, we definitely didn’t set any land-speed records. However, the groomed trails that meander through the beautiful rolling forests near the base of Crowsnest Mountain, the 2,788-metre behemoth that reigns over the region, were absolutely stunning on this bluebird day.
