Zion Williamson has left the Orlando bubble due to an urgent family medical matter.
left the NBA’s Orlando bubble on Thursday morning “to attend to an urgent family medical matter,” the team has announced.“We fully support Zion’s decision to leave the NBA campus to be with his family,” Pelicans Executive Vice President of Basketball Operations David Griffin said in a team statement. “Out of respect for the Williamson family, we will have no further comment at this time.”
Williamson, 20, played in just 19 games for the Pelicans in his rookie regular-season due to a knee injury after being taken first overall in the 2019 draft. When he did play, though, Williamson electrified while averaging 23.6 points, 6.8 rebounds and 2.2 assists per game. The Pelicans enter the NBA’s restart sitting in 10th in the Western Conference with hopes of making up ground on the eighth-place Memphis Grizzlies during the eight “seeding games” that will be played before the post-season gets underway.
