District 10 City Councilman Clayton Perry deserves the chance to recover and return to...
District 8 City Councilman Manny Pelaez offers a hug to District 10 Councilman Clayton Perry after City Council passes a vote of “no confidence” against him during a special session Monday. Still, Pelaez writes: “I supported his decision to take a leave of absence while he submits to a rehabilitation program and begins his long walk down the road to recovery.”I believe in the power of redemption.
This vote has given rise to objections from people who would have preferred to see Perry pilloried and made to endure a gantlet of punishments for his terrible decisions regarding allegedly driving while intoxicated — choices that could have resulted in tragedy. Second, our vote at City Hall has no impact on the legal consequences he faces. In the courtroom, he will have to face prosecution for his accused crimes, like any other San Antonian facing similar charges. The criminal case is a serious matter. He could emerge with a criminal record. He will pay a lot of money for lawyers and potential court-ordered fines. He could be ordered to serve years of probation.I talked with Perry at great length leading up to our City Council vote.
