There have been five roadway deaths already in North Bergen this year, one less than all of 2022.

A Union City man who tried darting across Tonnelle Avenue in North Bergen early Monday morning was struck and killed, authorities said, the township’s fourth roadway fatality in the past month. The crash occurred at 12:14 a.m. in the area of 74th Street, North Bergen Capt. David Dowd said. Responding police officers responded to the area of 74th Street, where they found the victim, 43-year-old Manuel Diaz-Marquez unresponsive in the right southbound lane of Tonnelle Avenue.
Officers immediately provided medical aid to the Diaz-Marquez, but could not obtain a pulse. Despite all attempts to resuscitate the him by the officers and North Bergen EMS, Diaz-Marquez succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.
