A man crossing a street near Kaiser Hospital in Oakland died after he was hit by a speeding car and the driver who fled was later arrested, police said.
OAKLAND — A 35-year-old San Francisco man died Thursday afternoon after he was hit by a car while crossing a street and the vehicle driver who left the scene was later arrested, authorities said.The driver, a 31-year-old Pittsburg woman, was being held at Santa Rita Jail on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter and hit-and-run causing death, authorities said.
The fatal collision happened about 4 p.m. Thursday at the intersection of Piedmont Avenue and West MacArthur Boulevard. Police said the man was walking across West MacArthur in the marked crosswalk when he was hit by a 2016 Chrysler that was traveling at high speed westbound on West MacArthur.Police said the woman fled the scene in the car, drove back later but failed to stop and was finally stopped by police and detained a few blocks away.
Police said speed played a part in the crash, but drugs and alcohol did not appear to be factors in what happened . The fatality remains under investigation. Anyone with information is asked to call police traffic investigators at 510-777-8570.
