Main, Pearland.As the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo approaches, Pearland ISD students are preparing to showcase their Western-themed artwork to the community on Jan. 19 at its rodeo art exhibition.
Gates will open at 4:30 p.m. for the show, which will be at Virgil Gant Education Support Center, 1928 N. Main, and consist of over 500 pieces created by students in grades kindergarten through 12, with works ranging from three-dimensional works to paintings.Dawson High School student Gracin Nguyen, now a senior, won the grand champion award out of 37,000 entries at the Houston show last year. Her piece was sold for $250,000. She will have art displayed is this year's Pearland ISD art show.
At the Pearland exhibit, an HLS&R judging committee of members who are not connected to the district will select up to 50 artworks that will move to the next phase of competition at NRG Stadium in March. Judging criteria covers originality, skill set, creativity and artistic voice. Student names are hidden to eliminate bias during judging.
