UPDATE: Reports say the assailant struck the House speaker's husband with a hammer and screamed, 'Where is Nancy?'
Paul Pelosi, the husband of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, was hospitalized Friday after a home invasion at their San Francisco house early Thursday by a man who hit him with a hammer and shouted, “Where is Nancy, where is Nancy?,” sources told the Associated Press.
Police Chief Bill Scott said Depape is suspected of attempted homicide, assault with a deadly weapon, elderly abuse and burglary. San Francisco District Attorney Brooke Jenkins appeared at the Friday morning news conference but did not announce any charges. “Our officers observed Mr. Pelosi and the suspect both holding a hammer,” Scott said. “The suspect pulled the hammer away from Mr. Pelosi and violently assaulted him with it. Our officers immediately tackled the suspect, disarmed him, took him into custody, requested emergency backup and rendered medical aid.”
“For safety reasons, the USCP does not discuss potential security measures” for members of Congress, the agency said in an email Friday morning. Members of Congress have received additional dollars for security at their homes. Some have pushed for more protection as people have showed up at their homes and as members have received an increasing number of threatening communications.
