Houde is in his rookie campaign with the team. JEREMY FRASER/CAPE BRETON POSTMajor junior hockey players are the best of the best in their age group, most often athletes who were stars in their hometowns before arriving on the bigger stage.

Houde is an outlier in Cape Breton, but the Charlottetown Islanders are stocked with older rookies, faced with a substantial overhaul after their run to the President's Cup final in June. Charlottetown has capitalized on the availability of Ontario players who were unable to crack the Ontario Hockey League including Giovanni Morneau who has 20 points in 25 games at 19 .

No team in the Q is having more success with late bloomers than the Victoriaville Tigres. Few predicted the Tigres to be contending, but at the conclusion of weekend play, they trailed Sherbrooke by just three points in the Western Conference. The Tigres only have five 19-year-olds amongst their group and of the five, only Maxime Pellerin was on an opening night roster at 18.
