Led by Patrick Cantlay and sparked by plenty of hat discourse, the Americans cut down their big deficit Saturday. But four wins Sunday are all Team Europe needs to capture the Ryder Cup.
GUIDONIA MONTECELIO, Italy — There was commotion on the green, hats inexplicably waving in the gallery and a brilliant setting sun lighting up the picturesque Roman countryside when the United States finally decided to come to life at the Ryder Cup.
Despite the mixture of joy and relief that washed over the 18th green, the United States still enters Sunday’s singles session an overwhelming underdog and will need a historic performance to retain the Ryder Cup.Cantlay’s emotional birdie on 18 pushed him and Wyndham Clark over Rory McIlroy and Matt Fitzpatrick, 1-up.
They have a chance — albeit a slim one. No team has ever overcome a 5-point deficit on the final day of a Ryder Cup, and the United States hasn’t figured out a way to win on a European course in 30 years. While Saturday’s final match may not have tilted the scoreboard, it did give the Americans their first real reason for hope at this Ryder Cup, lighting a fire under the squad as it left the course.
