Keith Wilson and Tom Marazzo distanced themselves from controversial parts of the “Freedom Convoy” movement on Wednesday, while Pat King — a lightning rod in his own right — tried to explain his past racist and seemingly violent statements.
OTTAWA—Portraying themselves as honest brokers of a righteous cause, prominent “Freedom Convoy” figures distanced themselves from more controversial elements of their protest movement at the Emergencies Act inquiry Wednesday, before an outburst from an angry supporter interrupted the proceedings.
Marazzo gave a similar assessment, at one point telling inquiry commissioner Paul Rouleau he asked someone to accompany King on a “slow roll” to impede traffic near the Ottawa airport to ensure he was “well-behaved.” He also described King as a “little bit of a wild card” who could go off like a “hand grenade,” but Marazzo said he never had concerns King would break with their intention to protest peacefully.
Near the end of King’s testimony, a man in the gallery at the inquiry rose and began shouting after Paul Champ, a lawyer for a group of Ottawa residents and businesses, questioned King’s claims that the occupation was akin to “Woodstock.” The outburst prompted Rouleau to pause the hearing while security herded the man out of the room.
Wilson and Marazzo also criticized a demand by Canada Unity that garnered much attention and controversy during the occupation. The group, led by a protester named James Bauder, was part of the original organization of the “Freedom Convoy.
