Larry Brookson, the acting director of the Parliamentary Protective Service , told MPs that the force was constantly looking to improve and deal with evolving threats and the rising budget was meant to help with that.

Brookson said the force drafted its budget before the “Freedom Convoy” came to Ottawa. The convoy blocked streets around Parliament Hill for three weeks, before the government brought in the Emergencies Act and a massive police operation cleared the streets arresting nearly 200 people.Article content

“It wasn’t just the impact on our employees. It was the impact on their respective families, because a lot of our employees were not able to be with their families, because we had them working almost non-stop,” he said.Article content The committee is studying a proposal to extend PPS jurisdiction off Parliament Hill onto Wellington and Sparks streets in a bid to avoid further disruptions in the future, which would have given the federal force the authority to close the streets in advance of the convoy protest.

The debate over the security of the precinct comes as another convoy is set to descend on Ottawa this weekend.
