Protesters called on the City of Parksville to ensure there's a shelter for the unhoused this winter after the city didn't have one last year

More than 30 people gathered in Parksville, by its city hall, on Friday and demanded that its council ensure there will be an overnight winter shelter for the homeless this winter.

“There’s a lot of us out here, and for us to get a home, it’s outrageous. The prices are outrageous,” said TJ Sheffield who says he’s been unhoused for several years. There is hope. Knox United Church in Parksville has signed a deal with BC Housing for an overnight shelter this winter that would hold eight people with an overflow of up to 12.

“This is a really important issue that has been unresolved in this community for at least five years since the opening of Orca Place where there are 18 beds in the basement, which the council has not allowed to be open,” said Shirley Sterlinger, a member of the Social, Justice Committee with Knox United Church.
