The federal government is investing $71 million into nine Parks Canada projects, focusing on visitor safety and critical infrastructure.

The funds, to be distributed over the next three years, will be targeted at the Banff, Jasper, Yoho and Kootenay National Parks, and will help begin or complete infrastructure improvements ranging from Trans-Canada Highway and Icefields Parkway roadway rehabilitation, to water and sewer work in the community of Lake Louise.Sign up to receive daily headline news from the Calgary Herald, a division of Postmedia Network Inc.

On the B.C. side of the Rockies, the funding will allow for a Highway 93 S. roadway renovation through Kootenay National Park, and Trans-Canada Highway rehabilitation between Lake Louise and Field.Article contentThe Lake Louise sewer and water rehabilitation project has the heftiest price tag, at $23.7 million — which includes $12.1 million in new funding and $11.6 million committed in 2016.

The project will see upgrades to and replacement of lift stations, as well as adding safety redundancies in case of a failure.
