“Obviously, there’s a bottleneck or a holdup somewhere at the top, near the top,” Joey Reed, Trevor’s father, told reporters outside the White House on Wednesday afternoon, before the meeting. “And we want to speak to the president, we want to cut through that, we want him to hear from us. We want him to hear other viewpoints on the subject matter than just experts in the room.”
White House communications director Kate Bedingfield had said Wednesday that the White House was working to get a meeting with the Reeds scheduled, and Biden said himself earlier on Wednesday that he was going to try to meet with them. Reed is one of two Texans being held in Russia in high-profile cases. Houston native and Olympic gold medalist Brittney Griner also has been detained since February.
In a statement, Reed’s parents, Joey and Paula Reed, said Trevor met with his Russian lawyer Tuesday and had begun another hunger strike to “protest being sent back to solitary [confinement] while injured and having [tuberculosis].” He first went on a hunger strike in November“Again, while we are in awe of our son’s integrity and strength of character, as his parents, there aren’t words to express how concerned we are about our son’s health,” they said.
