The watches originally were made for frogman commandos in the Royal Italian Navy
With this week’s launch of the limited-edition Radiomir Officine PAM1385 , Swiss watch company Panerai time travels back to 1935, the year of the Radiomir’s birth, according to an unearthed archival receipt for a prototype of the iconic model dated Oct. 24, 1935. At the time, the small firm in Florence, Italy, was supplying high-precision instruments for the Italian Royal Navy.
Not only did the brawny 47mm watches boast reliable water resistance, but the dials also lit up in the dark for superior visibility in the murky depths. The signature sandwich-style dial was constructed of overlapping discs with the top disc cutaway to reveal the toxic radium lume that was sealed on a separate disc below.
The polished 45mm cushion-shaped case frames a matte brown sandwich-style dial with cut-away indices and Arabic numerals at 12 and six o’clock. The retro beige Super-LumiNova glows green in the dark for heightened visibility in low light. Additionally, the hour hand is segmented in half in keeping with historic Radiomir style, and the clean dial design features only the “Radiomir Panerai” inscription without the collection’s typical OP logo, which appears on the crown.
