I may have been on a different continent when the news broke about SaltWire Network seeking creditor protection, but it still hit home like a body blow.

In my early days at The Telegram, the multitude of reporters in our boisterous newsroom gained expertise from being assigned to specific beats, including education, labour, the fisheries, the arts, municipal and provincial politics, business and court. I was the municipal reporter for a time, sent out to cover council meetings in St. John’s, Mount Pearl, Paradise and even further afield if something interesting was in the offing. Multiple media outlets staffed those meetings.

So when I heard the news about SaltWire Network’s financial predicament, I was buoyed by public messages of support and angered by the trolls gleefully anticipating the loss of another local mainstream media outlet.
