But I didn’t get to say what I valued most about them or how they changed my life for the better, or how much I would miss them when they were gone; how our hearts would ache for one more phone call, one more smile. As much a part of the culture as the traditional dishes and warm hospitality dished out Velma’s Place — also sadly gone.
But as it turns out, Don Tucker’s life was much more complicated than some of the Newfoundland folk songs he played. “I used to hate to see him down there. What a sin, right? And all of them that tormented him, I guess they all regretted it after, the way they treated him.”
