You'll never want to leave...
Fancy rubbing shoulders with royalty? Well you can at the Palace Hotel Tokyo, which occupies a unequalled position right on the edge of the Imperial Palace Gardens in Tokyo’s prestigious Marunouchi district, a mere moat away from Japan’s royal residency.
The rooms here are fit for a king too. There are 278 guest rooms and 12 suites in total, offering picture-perfect views of the surrounding area. The interiors are cosy and luxurious, with calm, earthy-toned decor, wonderfully comfy beds and an open-style bathroom with a huge bath to soak in, as well as a shower. If you book a Club room on the hotel’s higher floors, you also get access to a private lounge. This relaxed space has its own terrace where food and drink is served throughout the day.
It’s important not to fill up too much though - the Palace Hotel Tokyo also has ten restaurants and bars to choose from, including French restaurant Crown, Amber Palace, which serves Shanghainese and Cantonese cuisine and the Royal Bar, where you can sink into a plush velvet chair to enjoy a glass of something boozy.
We headed to Wadakura, the hotel’s Japanese offering, where guests can choose between four separate dining areas specialising in tempura, teppanyaki, sushi or, as we picked, kaiseki, a type of cuisine designed to present the best of each season. Our meal included a clear soup with steamed green beans and shrimp dumpling, seasonal sashimi, deep fried salmon with vinegar, vegetables and white asparagus, steamed rice with miso soup and lastly a fruity dessert.
Confession time: the Palace Hotel was so great, we didn’t leave once in the whole 24 hours we were staying there. And another confession: before we left, we had to sneak up to the Club Lounge for one more servings of the delicious tiramisu. It’s what any self-respecting royal would do, right? Right.
