Muhammad Shahzeb Khan, a 20-year-old Pakistani national from Ontario, faces extradition to the United States to stand trial for allegedly plotting to kill Jews at a Jewish centre in Brooklyn, New York. Khan was arrested in Ormstown, Quebec, on September 4, 2024, after Canadian authorities received information from the FBI about his alleged pro-Islamic State activities. He is charged with one count of attempting to provide material support and resources to a terrorist organization.
According to court documents, the FBI became aware of Khan after a paid informant observed his pro-Islamic State musings on Facebook in October 2023. Khan allegedly communicated with the informant on an encrypted platform, expressing his support for the terror group and sharing Islamic State videos and propaganda. The informant's conversations with Khan were documented and ultimately led to his identification by Canadian authorities.Khan is accused of planning a mass shooting around October 7, 2024, to coincide with the one-year anniversary of the Hamas attack on Israel. He allegedly discussed the plan with undercover officers posing as fellow travelers in a pro-Islamic State group chat. Khan is also alleged to have encouraged people in the chat group to procure weapons and other materials needed for the attack. Canadian authorities intervened and disrupted a separate alleged Islamic State-inspired murder plot in Toronto, but Khan continued with his plan. He ultimately decided on New York City as his target due to its large Jewish population. Khan was arrested in Ormstown, Quebec, on September 4, 2024, after travelling from Toronto. His lawyer in Canada argues that the case against Khan amounts to entrapment
