Burnaby goalkeeper Sarah Loewen leads the GNAC with five shutouts, while first-year Denby Carswell carded a season's best on the golf course.
Burnaby athletes brought back two player-of-the-week honours to SFU this week, one from between the pipes on the pitch and one from the greens.
Sophomore goalkeeper Sarah Loewen is atop of the Great Northwest Athletic Conference in shutouts, recording two in as many starts to earn the women's soccer defensive player of the week. On the course, Red Leafs golfer Denby Carswell earned his first-ever weekly honour after tallying his best round of the 2023-24 season.
Loewen, a Burnaby Mountain Secondary grad, made nine saves in two games last week as SFU blanked Northwest Nazarene 1-0 and 4-0 over Central Washington .Loewen, following her second player of the week nod, also leads the NCAA Div. II conference with 32 saves, a 0.50 goals-against average and a .889 save percentage. Meanwhile, Carswell's first GNAC player of the week award came after he carded the top three-round total among men's golfers in the conference last week.
He finished tied for 12th at the Chico State Invitational in California with a three-day total of 214 strokes .Carswell's tournament outing improved his scoring average to 72 shots per round, good enough for third-best in GNAC.
