The agency overseeing San Francisco’s car-free streets wants to significantly scale back one of its most popular closures, moving in the opposite direction of what neighborhood groups have advocated for.for how Hayes Street’s weekend closure to cars should be amended moving forward, including that the street’s closure be reduced to Saturdays from 1 p.m. to 10 p.m.

SFMTA officials said the three-day closure limited emergency access for the San Francisco Fire Department and affected operations for the 21 Hayes Muni line. They argued a one-day closure will allow organizers to “focus their resources on creating a successful, consolidated event while accommodating the multitude of needs on the street during the other weekend times.

“The statistic fails to include two important facts: 1) How many merchants were also supportive of the 3-day program, and 2) Whether the merchants surveyed were from the 400 block, or other parts of Hayes Valley,” he wrote to The Examiner. “Reducing the program from three days to one is a step in the wrong direction, against the wishes of our community and merchants.”

District captains manage specific geographical areas in The City, and usually keep in close contact with neighborhood leaders — including supervisors. Members of the command staff, such as assistant chiefs and commanders, have broader responsibilities. The City’s ethics watchdogs are already contemplating regulations that would effectively implement the ballot measure if and when it passes.
