With Manny Machado again starting at third base for the Padres, rookie CJ Abrams is out of the starting lineup
Machado is 2-for-13 with a double, a walk and eight strikeouts since returning to the lineup Thursday at Dodger Stadium as the designated hitter. He sat Friday but entered the game as a pinch hitter and played third base in the bottom of the eighth inning.
Machado played all of Saturday’s and Sunday’s games at third base. Padres manager Bob Melvin had ideas about sitting him Monday, but Machado said he was good to go.With Machado starting at third base, rookie CJ Abrams is out of the starting lineup for a third straight game as Ha-Seong Kim starts again at shortstop.
Abrams entered as a pinch-runner and scored a run Sunday, but he hasn’t started since going 0-for-3 with two strikeouts on Friday and is hitting .231/.250/.282 with two doubles, no walks and eight strikeouts in 12 games since rejoining the Padres. Jorge Alfaro is starting a second straight game behind the plate after dealing with right knee inflammation on the road trip. He is 3-for-14 with a double, three RBIs, one walk and eight strikeouts over his last four games. Before Sunday, Alfaro last started behind the plate on June 28, when the knee forced him from the game.
As for Seattle, for all the familiar faces on that roster, only one is in Monday’s lineup: Justin Upton of the 2015 Padres. He is serving as the DH and batting seventh.
