“You talk about opponents we’re supposed to beat,” Padres manager Bob Melvin said in response to a question about how the Padres have fared on this trip. “We’re just trying to win every game. ... Every game is important right now, no matter who we’re playing.” “It was actually probably the biggest play of the game, certainly at the time,” Melvin said."... We didn’t do a whole lot offensively, and then all of a sudden we perk up and score three runs. I thought we were in a good position to win. We just didn’t do it.”
On Tuesday, for the first time in 17 games, they managed more than three runs in a game. That ended the longest such streak in the major leagues since 1979. They played from behind Tuesday, as the Marlins took a 3-0 lead against starter Sean Manaea — on solo home runs by Nick Fortes in the second and fourth innings and a walk, a single and Jesus Aguilar’s RBI double in the third.
