Robinson Cano gets first two hits with Padres; Fernando Tatis Jr. works in Arizona
The Padres signed Robinson Cano on Friday with no real expectations other than his being a left-handed hitter who could come off the bench and could fill in occasionally in the field and as a designated hitter.
One down. And if he continues to hit as he did in Tuesday’s 3-0 victory over the Phillies, maybe many more to go. Cano was starting his second straight game, this time at designated hitter after working at second base Sunday in Atlanta and going 0-for-5.He had been designated for assignment and then released by the Mets after starting the season 8-for-41 with one home run.
“There’s a lot of guys here that I know from the past, and it makes it feel good,” he said. “It’s been really, really nice. They made me feel like I’ve been here for years. … I’m happy I choose this team. The way it is, the chemistry here is another level. That’s why this team is what it is. That’s why the play is so good, because the chemistry is always there. And that’s what you need as a team.”Fernando Tatis Jr. is in Peoria, Ariz., working on his defense and base running.
