Austin Nola hasn't been fully healthy since he joined Padres in 2020
The ball went up, the mask was dropped, the ball came down, and Austin Nola did not crumple to the ground.Because a high foul pop-up that initially shot back well behind the plate before spinning back viciously toward fair territory, causing Nola to backpedal and step on his mask as he made the catch is just the kind of thing that could go a very different way for Nola.
It would be an exaggeration to say everything Nola does is with playing an entire season in the forefront of his mind. But only slightly. The aim for durability and endurance colored his workouts and his diet this offseason and drives him now.His health, as far as the Padres are concerned, is the only question regarding Nola. They wanted him badly,There are four catchers ostensibly vying for a spot on the roster, but it is Nola who will be the primary catcher as long as he is able.
Nola arrived in Colorado on Aug. 31, 2020, and caught a shutout thrown by six Padres pitchers that night while he dealt with the effects of a sprained LCL in his right knee. A few weeks later, he fouled a ball off the top of his left foot and played the rest of the season through the pain of a fractured bone there.
That last injury is part of the reason he can declare himself, for the first time since joining the Padres, “fully healthy.”“For me, sometimes I don’t want to take time off,” Nola said. “I think more is better. And I think the thumb was a blessing in disguise. It said, ‘Less is better. Let your body heal. All of it — mentally, physically, emotionally, the whole deal.’”
