After taking 51 pitches to get through the first two innings, the right-hander threw just 39 more and ended up essentially cruising through six scoreless innings and handing a two-run lead to the Padres bullpen.After Steven Wilson retired the Dodgers in order in the seventh, Luis Garcia yielded singles to the first two Dodgers batters in the eighth before striking out Mookie Betts.
Darvish threw 33 pitches in the second inning alone and took 30 to get through the next three. His fifth inning lasted six pitches, and he was at 81 pitches to that point. He took nine more in the sixth. Darvish, who had a 2.70 ERA over 30 innings in five starts against the Dodgers last season, walked a batter in an 18-pitch first inning Saturday and faced loaded bases after a one-out single and a pair of two-out walks in the top of the second. He had to that point thrown 18 balls among his 45 pitches.
The next five batters in the inning each saw at least six pitches. Four of them went to a full count, the last of those being Betts.
