José Azocar among Padres who struggled to make ends meet as a minor leaguer and more than happy that life will be much easier for them going forward
With a left-hander on the mound, José Azocar arrived at Petco Park on Friday to find that his name was penciled in the lineup for Game 2 of his second year in the big leagues. That means he’s on the 40-man roster and will make just north of the league-minimum $720,000 this year if he remains with the Padres all season.
But not so far that Azocar can’t applaud minor league baseball reaching a historic deal to establish their first-even collective bargaining agreement.Minor leaguers on Friday voted to ratify a five-year agreement that will at least double the pay of players at every level and pay players year-round outside of a six-week break in the offseason.“It means a lot,” Azocar said. “People will have money, to give to their families, to take care of everything.
Also included are further improvements to the recently established minor league housing policy, improved transportation, increased per diem, improved health and retirement benefits and a guarantee that Major League Baseball will not contract minor league affiliates, as they did in axing 43 affiliates before then 2020 season.
