Padres manage just three runs, give away one, as three-game winning streak comes to unceremonious end in a game played in the rain at Coors Field
When their game finally began, almost 2½ hours late, they performed much of the night like a team intent on going nowhere.
With Fernando Tatis Jr. beginning the inning on second base, Juan Soto reached on a bunt single and Machado’s dribbled ball in front of the plate also went for a single that loaded the bases. To start the bottom of the 10th, Brenton Doyle laid down a bunt to try to move Elehuris Montero to third base. Catcher Gary Sánchez fielded the ball and threw to Manny Machado covering third base for what appeared to be the first out of the inning. But the ball came out of Machado’s glove as he applied the tag, and Montero was safe. It was the Padres’ third error of the game, and they were all costly.
It seemed most of the night the Padres would simply be undone by the steady rain, a soggy field, a middling starting pitcher and a team 10½ games worse than them and selling off parts. Lugo was through four innings on 45 pitches, having gotten help from Machado starting a pair of double plays, before the Padres defense crumbled behind him.
