Padres get bat they needed, send minor-league pitcher Justin Lange to New York

The team sent right-hander Justin Lange, a 20-year-old drafted 34Voit, 31, led the major leagues with 22 home runs in the COVID-shortened ‘20 season but had just 11 homers in 241 plate appearances last year. A right-handed hitter, he had surgery to repair a left meniscus tear in March and spent four stints on the injured list.
Padres manager Bob Melvin said Voit’s role in San Diego will be as a designated hitter with some playing time at first base. The Padres have the lefty-hitting Eric Hosmer at first base although the team has been attempting to trade him. The move likely adds about $5 million to the Padres’ payroll, as that is about what Voit is projected to command in his first year of arbitration.
He was acquired for his bat, as the Padres seek to improve on a .401 team slugging percentage that ranked 21The team is still in need of a starting corner outfielder. The Padres have just three outfielders on the 40-man roster, and all three are starting Friday’s Cactus League opener.
