A civil suit arising from the 2021 incident in Woodward Twp. across the Susquehanna River from Lock Haven was settled for $950,000.
Brian St. John III, 22, made the admission Tuesday in county court when he pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter and aggravated assault in the death of Jakob Lee Haines, 21, of Beech Creek.
“What started as a joke turned deadly,” the court petition to approve the wrongful death and survival claims in a related civil suit states. The two were horsing around and St. John did not intentionally kill Haines, defense attorney George E. Lepley maintained. The civil suit was brought by Jason Lee Haines and Patricia Kreitz, parents of the deceased, against St. John, Brian St. John Masonry and St. John Masonry Inc. St. John’s parents own the businesses.
