CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. — The Prince Edward Island Trappers Association doesn’t think a complete ban on trapping is a good idea, but its members believe there are solutions to prevent unfortunate incidents where pets get caught in traps.

The petition has gathered more than 2,300 signatures from Islanders, with organizers previously telling SaltWire that they've heard many stories of residents whose pets were killed in snares or traps. Also, there needs to be more education in P.E.I. to raise awareness about wildlife and trapping, LeLacheur said.At the May 9 meeting, New Haven-Rocky Point MLA Peter Bevan-Baker posed a question to Pierre-Yves Daoust about why the report authored by Daoust last year, commissioned by the province, did not explore alternatives to trapping. - Thinh Nguyen/SaltWirePierre-Yves Daoust, a retired wildlife pathologist at the Atlantic Veterinary College, also spoke at the standing committee meeting.

“We seem to use it quite regularly in the Halifax Regional Municipality. It seems to be an efficient way of trapping those animals,” he told the standing committee.
