It has been an August to remember for two Prince Edward Island families. Dave Cameron coached Team Canada to a gold medal at the recent International Ice ...
Athletic therapist Kevin Elliott, left, and head coach Dave Cameron, second left, celebrate with Team Canada staff members following a 3-2 overtime win over Finland in the gold-medal game of the 2022 International Ice Hockey Federation world junior hockey championship at Rogers Place in Edmonton on Aug. 20. Cameron, head coach of the Ontario Hockey League’s Ottawa 67’s, resides during the off-season in Kildare Capes, P.E.I.
“The Hlinka event has always been special,” said Ben, who attended the world junior championship with his older brother, Connor, and other family members. “ and I had a great event , and we still talk about that years later. Like the Camerons, Elliott cherished the opportunity to share the gold-medal victory with his son, Matt Barr.
“He always said good morning to me, and it was fun to see him because it brought back a lot of good memories of working with the Islanders and the staff, working with Spider and that. I miss that a lot.” “I would expect you will see him in a Golden Knights’ jersey sooner than later. He’s going to excel at the pro game.”
Canada, which defeated Finland 3-2 in overtime in the gold-medal game on Aug. 20, completed the tournament undefeated at 7-0 , which Dave described as an impressive accomplishment. “Everybody bought in, and we really and truly were a team. Some teams would come over as a group of individuals and never mesh, but our team meshed, and that’s the best thing about it.”
“The hockey, I felt, was really, really good. Obviously, there were a lot of players who were not there, and I get that, it’s a part of the game. It also proves we have a pretty good pool to select.
