“Not many towns were promoting sports events in Canada like the Town of Summerside was,” said Matthews in an interview April 21 with SaltWire. “Bill and Basil combined could see the benefit of bringing people into the community.” “His expertise in marketing and community development and building communities through the aspect of recreation – he’d forget more than most people know.”

Doug MacLean, who played Little League Baseball, minor hockey and junior A hockey with Schurman, also worked on a couple of major sporting events. In 1996, MacLean was head coach of the Florida Panthers when they held part of training camp at Cahill Stadium. In September 2001, MacLean, president and general manager, brought the Columbus Blue Jackets to Summerside.

“I’ll never forget his statement one time that all the things we go after for Summerside certainly lift the spirits of our community,” said Stewart. Municipality of the District of Lunenburg director of recreation, parks and tourism from 2020 to 2022.Stewart has many memories of working together with Schurman on bid packages for events, but two that stand out are when Summerside was awarded the 1994 International Softball Congress world senior men’s fastpitch championship in Salt Lake City, Utah, in 1992, and the 1997 Canadian junior A hockey championship in Winnipeg in 1995.
