The P.E.I. Humane Society is calling on Islanders to help raise $3 million for the construction of a new animal shelter on its two-acre property in Charlottetown. ContributedCHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. — The P.E.I. Humane Society is asking Islanders for support as it aims to raise $3 million for a new animal shelter on its two-acre property in Charlottetown.

The society's Expanding Our Paw Print capital campaign has been in the works for several years, facing numerous challenges. Due to the pandemic, inflation and increased demand for services, P.E.I.'s only animal shelter has had a difficult time moving the project forward. Initially, the plan was to expand the existing shelter, but after an 18-month search for a temporary facility yielded nothing, the shelter team decided to build a new facility instead of expanding. However, with the change in plans, the shelter needs to increase its fundraising efforts.

The project's cost is estimated to be over $5.8 million. With $2.8 million already raised, the shelter is looking to raise an additional $3 million to complete the new facility. PEIHS development and communications co-ordinator Ashley Travis said the team will remain in their existing shelter while building a new facility at the back of their property.“We're calling on our community to come together and support the Expanding Our Paw Print campaign."It has been our privilege to have the trust and support of our East Coast communities for the last 200 years. Our SaltWire team is always watching out for the place we call home.
