Money will go for new department at Queen Elizabeth Hospital
Pamela Large-Moran said her late aunt, Betty Large, would be proud of the creation of the Betty Large Endowment Fund to help mental health and addiction services at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Charlottetown. - Dave StewartCHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. — Nothing meant more to the late Betty Large than improving mental-health care at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital.
“My aunt Betty was a nurse also spent a lot of time getting support from the QEH,’’ Pamela Large-Moran told SaltWire Network in an interview on Jan. 26.The interview came two days after the QEH Foundation announced it has established the mental health and addictions ignition fund. Betty Large, left, is pictured with Antionette Perry, lieutenant governor of P.E.I., at a QEH Legacy Society tea in 2017. Large was a legacy society member when she died in 2020. ContributedLarge-Moran said her aunt was always grateful for the care Large’s only daughter, Elaine Gaudet, received at the P.E.I. Cancer Treatment Centre. Gaudet died in 1999 from cancer at the age of 25, and the loss of her only child took a toll on Large’s mental health.
The P.E.I. government is currently constructing and staffing a mental health and addictions emergency department and short stay unit, which will be co-located with the hospital’s emergency department. Slated for completion in November, there are about $300,000 in technology and equipment needs.Future plans include upgrades to the tele-psychiatry equipment and the development of a mental health and addictions child and youth acute care unit.
“This is very meaningful, and I’m really pleased with it going into an endowment fund where the capital will always be there.’’ Dougan said helping Island families was important to her mother and was reflected in the fact her mother ran two resident care homes in Charlottetown.
