“Where is that appropriate or morally acceptable to put up someone's rent $600 a month?' Carr said. 'Where do they expect these people to come up with these funds? Some people are going to end up being out on the street.”
A letter to residents, penned by Corrigan Home operator Brian Hooley, linked the increases to a nearly three-year-long delay in finalizing negotiations for a new funding agreement with P.E.I.’s Department of Social Development and Housing.“This is not a ‘Corrigan Home’ increase, this increase is occurring at every community care facility on Prince Edward Island in accordance with the base rates worked out with the province,” Hooley wrote in his letter.
“Where is that appropriate or morally acceptable to put up someone's rent $600 a month?" Carr said. "Where do they expect these people to come up with these funds? Some people are going to end up being out on the street.” However, Cecil Villard, executive director of the P.E.I. Association of Community Long Term Care, disputed the link between the negotiations and the self-pay rate increases.“The contract negotiations with regard to subsidy has got nothing to do with the rate that operators charge self-pay residents," Villard said.
But he said community care homes base their self-pay rates on the province’s subsidized rate of $2,465 per bed.
