Durham police say 14 drivers are facing impaired charges, just a week after the force launched its annual Festive RIDE campaign.

Officers stopped 1,755 vehicles at checkpoints in Clarington, Oshawa, Whitby, Ajax, Pickering and Uxbridge.Fourteen were found to be impaired, while 12 were given a three-day suspension for blowing in the ‘Warn’ range. They also performed nearly three times the number of breath tests. One of the alleged drunk drivers, a 28-year-old from Clarington, was also charged with stunt driving.

In another case, a 40-year-old from Ajax allegedly had an open container of alcohol in their vehicle.Three novice drivers had their licences temporarily suspended, while two people were charged with drug offenses. All of those figures, other than the novice driver suspensions, were higher than they were in the first week of the 2021 campaign.
