There are 78 wildfires currently burning in Alberta and 19 of those are listed as out of control, government officials said Friday. Hundreds in northern Saskatchewan have also been forced to evacuate.

EDMONTON — More than a dozen wildfires are burning out of control in Alberta and thousands of people have been evacuated in several affected areas, government officials said Friday.

Calling the situation “very serious,” Lacroix said “this is a stark reminder of just how unpredictable and powerful wildfires can be.” Officials said they couldn’t provide a full picture of the destruction so far, but said one of the most devastated areas was Fox Lake where between 17 and 20 homes have been lost.

“We’re expecting very warm weather and extremely strong winds,” she said. “This is not great for wildfire activity. That tends to cause very active wildfires.”Most of the worst fires are in central and northern Alberta. As of Friday, according to the province’s fire tracking dashboard, there were nine out of control fires to the west and southwest of Edmonton, and there were six to the north and northwest.
